“Yes, this is a video game where bat poop is staggeringly deadly.”
– from the full review, which you can read here.

Yeah, I know it has its fans, but I simply do not like Spelunker. I think it seems to be trying too hard to not be any fun. Sometimes I get this idea (I would really love to try and dig deep into Deadly Towers someday, for one example) of “intentionally challenging,” but I have little patience with it when it is not accompanied by enjoyable mechanics. Battletoads is a fantastic example: Is it hard? Sure. But is it fun? Of course! Spelunker decides to have high challenge with low enjoyment and that, to me, is a ridiculous premise. Two frightening things about Spelunker on the NES:

1. There was a Spelunker 2 released in Japan.

2. The ghost-busting mechanic is, sadly, perhaps better here than in the actual Ghostbusters game.

I even made a Let’s Play video for this one, check it out:

One Response to “ Spelunker ”

  1. This game is definitely a tough one, but I do enjoy it. It’s hard, but not one of those games that make it almost impossible to play. I would have to say that this is one title that you have to just grow to love. I hated it at first. The Spelunker HD on the PSN is good as well. I say give it a chance!
