Interview: Stuttering Craig

Stud.

Stuttering Craig.

NintendoLegend.com is honored to have, for our fourth interview – among the foremost influential figures in gaming today, founder of the wonderfully popular ScrewAttack.com website, someone with some excellent insights on electronic games, and a man who cites the NES as among his all-time favorite consoles… Stuttering Craig!

###

1) The Elevator Pitch – A stranger runs into you, has no familiarity with you, and requests an introduction. What do you say, given 15 seconds to say it?

I’m Craig. I run a kick ass gaming website called ScrewAttack. We produce the best gaming entertainment online. Oh… and screw G4.

2) One word: Nintendo. Your thoughts?

I love their company and their games.

3) In the gaming community, especially as relates to the web and its videos, you are a significant, influential, skilled figure. Considering your experience(s) and interactions with people, what do you think the future of gaming looks like?

I think the future is as good as gamers want to make it. I do feel that the internet has played a role in changing gaming dramatically – mostly from the cynical nature that comes with the anonymity.

4) ScrewAttack.com is a fantastic site, obviously, full of lighthearted humor and high-quality content. I want to ask, specifically, about the name, which retro fans and perhaps others alike know to be referring to the Screw Attack item gained in the original Metroid game on the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). I think it is cool, but why choose Screw Attack as the name for the website?

We looked at a number of different names but honestly, ScrewAttack.com was the only one that wasn’t taken. ;)

5) Speaking of the NES, do you have a particular favorite old-school game?

I don’t have anything in particular. I’m of the mindset that you can find the positive in just about any game… except Wii Music.

6) I have noticed that you actually do not seem to stutter that much. Since that is not even a question, I will ask this instead: When you started ScrewAttack, did you honestly have any idea how “big” and well-recognized it would get, and foster such a strong community, or did you have big ambitions from the start?

Well I always wanted ScrewAttack to be something special but I do think we’ve carved out a really nice niche for a really great community. We’ve done some really cool and special things over the last 6 years and when the time comes I’m sure I’ll look back on them and say “man, that was really neat.”

7) The Morbid Question – What, ultimately, do you want your legacy to be?

Really, I want people to think of me as someone who always put the community first. People have been critical of me for things they have no idea about but my decisions have always been about what’s best for ScrewAttack and our community. Always.

Craig “Stuttering Craig” Skistimas’s commitment to community shows, as ScrewAttack has one of the most formidable community presences on the gaming web today, and has fostered the success of such entities as the Angry Video Game Nerd and Underbelly productions. I appreciate him taking time out of his busy schedule to answer some questions and wish him continued success in the future.

Mmmm.

The man.

  1. Eric, let me tell you right off the bat that despie his “popularity”, Stuttering Craig is a douchebag. For Craig’s main videos, Video Game Vaults briefly shows games Craig is commenting on. He used to work on these videos with Handsome Tom when he was still with ScrewAttack, but nowadays, Craig just gets the odd guests. The word “brief” is used since those videos usually last 2 to 4 minutes. Yeah, it’s not enough to go in depth but it’s enough to tell you the basis of the game.

    Now Eric, you might think, “This is fine and dandy, what’s wrong with it?” The problem with these videos are how frequent the awful jokes are. Almost every episode has them and the most notable ones are when Craig throws in random images and videos as if he discovered 4chan just recently. Well, the images at least, but the random videos are shit that anyone can find on YouTube, so if I want random garbage, I will go to YouTube. It’s never necessary to throw it in videos talking about retro games. In fact, it makes the videos rather off-putting.

    The other things are that wrong with the VGV’s are the odd comments from Stuttering Craig which are very elitist and should never be passed as a legitimate statement on gaming. He claims if you haven’t played Ghosts & Goblins, “you’re not a gamer” and “you suck”. “If you haven’t played Mega Man, what the hell?” and “don’t play Mega Man 2 on the Anniversary Collection, it doesn’t do playing it on the NES justice. You’ll thank me later.”

    Why I’m strongly against these comments is because everyone is new and has to start somewhere. My cousin following his first birthday hasn’t even picked up a controller, so following Craig’s logic, my cousin sucks. Maybe that’s taking those comments too literally but what about those that don’t get any appeal from sidescroller games? This may come to a shock to you, Craig, but not everyone likes Mario or Mega Man. Sure, not everyone likes Final Fantasy, Half-Life and such, but there’s no need to say, “You suck and you’re not a gamer for not liking those games.” The “Don’t play games on a re-release, only play it on the original” statement is also a crock of shit since they were made for those who didn’t get the chance to pick them up the first time. Should Stuttering Craig really expect a new gamer to pick up an NES as well as the cartridges which are very valuable these days?

    As for the Top Tens, it’s not much different to the Video Game Vaults except for listing top tens for whatever subject. To be fair, there is a variety in these lists since they range from top ten games for a particular console to music to gimmicky lists such as beards and breasts (obsession over pixelated boobs…). The joke lists are plain dumb, but the decisions in the lists are genuine. Well, most of the time anyway. Some of the lowlights from them are putting Superman 2 on the Top 10 PlayStation 3 Exclusives (yet it’s a movie), a Super Mario Bros. 3 II (you mean New Super Mario. Bros wasn’t good enough for you?), and calling *all* Final Fantasy characters “pussies” (I really wish this was made up). Some joke decisions could have been alright, but where Stuttering Craig fucks up is by declaring his lists as always right. What an egotistical and arrogant *prick*!

    Now don’t get me wrong, I’m all for different opinions to make things more interesting, but that doesn’t mean you can go and throw in random shit that isn’t even relevant or logical for some of them. No gaming list should *ever* throw in a movie like that. The only time when you should be seeing moves in game-related lists are for talking about game-based movies. For the cloning of Super Mario 3, if you’re so desperate Craig, just look at the fucking hacks people have made for them. As for Craig’s thoughts on Final Fantasy characters as a whole, just consider great characters like Kefka and Locke as well as who they put at #2 on the Top 10 Coolest Characters (Cloud *and* Sephiroth, who were both beaten by Duke Nukem) and facepalm so hard that you’ll break your skull in the process. *That* is how dumb his statement was.

    For some lists, Stuttering Craig refuses to explain why the games are good/bad. Him and Handsome Tom put Super Mario Bros. 2 (the USA version) at #9 for the Top 10 Worst Mario Games, and the best reason they explained was “You weren’t playing Super Mario Bros. 2 to begin with.” So fucking what if it wasn’t the real Mario 2 and just Doki Doki Panic with different sprites? How’s the game itself? They never explained that, and from what I’ve seen in it, Super Mario Bros. 2 isn’t a bad game. The other time when no explanation was given out was Aladdin in the Top 10 Movie-Based Games. Instead of talking about the game, Craig just talked about the time when he was with his girlfriend watching the film. How do people pass this off as legitimate? This may be occasionally but it just shows the carelessness.

    Speaking of girlfriends, at times I have a hard time believing Stuttering Craig has many followers (and friends) as well as a wife. As already established, he’s a douchebag and to further show that he’s very likely to be an awful friend, have a look at what Craig says about two Ecco the Dolphin games for the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis. This has been some running gag with ScrewAttack, who love taking great pleasure in beating up a short-lived game series that I’d actually take over Sonic the Hedgehog any day of the week. After several criticisms for his thoughts on Ecco the Dolphin, Stuttering Craig’s response was a highly sarcastic view on the sequel, Tides of Time. To summarise it, “Oh man, I’m so sorry for bashing Ecco. This game is actually good for all of this awesome stuff. No, Ecco sucks.” Can you imagine having a friend who’s sarcastic all the time, doesn’t actually like you, and turns his back around and quietly says, “You’re such a jerk.” Those sort of friends are never good and sarcasm is the lowest form of wit. You might want to have some thoughts on that Craig.

    Now then, let’s delve into Stuttering Craig’s betrayal actions. Yes, the two big moments where he kicked Handsome Tom and Guru Larry off his site. Handsome Tom leaving ScrewAttack in 2008 was definitely a surprise since he founded the site with Craig when they were talking about making podcasts based on video games. They were working together very well up until the decisions to register their company. Tom wanted Craig to register the site together, but Craig wasn’t up for it at the time.

    However, at a later point, Craig went and registered ScrewAttack himself without even talking to Tom about it. His reasons for doing this was terrible. Craig claimed he was “persuaded” to do this and had to take his own initiatives. That showed a huge indecency towards Tom, who was willing to work with Craig, and wasn’t going to do things on his own and not tell him about it. As one of the owners of the site, Tom was keeping up his responsibility for the site, but Craig on the other hand, he just treated his working partner and friend like trash. He even stated on the podcast that he refuses to apologise to Tom for his actions.

    Tom’s response for leaving ScrewAttack was stating how unhappy he was with Craig. He only wanted to work with the site because he had fun with it and wasn’t looking to earn profit from the merchandise and such, only from the work he did. Tom actually kept his dispute with Craig short and moved onto working for his new company called The Game Heroes, who are associated with That Guy With the Glasses/Channel Awesome. This was the only good thing that resulted from Craig’s betrayal, as Tom vastly improved with his image as well as making the videos more enjoyable.

    One year ago, on October 2010, Guru Larry was booted off ScrewAttack entirely despite not making a real contribution to them since late 2008-early 2009. The problem between him and Craig was Larry being offered by a gaming company who work for YouTube to become a YouTube partner. What ticked off Craig was Larry using the ScrewAttackEurope channel (which was Larry’s own channel) and thinking he was using ScrewAttack’s name for profit. Craig can’t take down someone just because of a channel name on YouTube. And besides, the name ScrewAttack originally came from the Metroid games, so he has no right to bitch about what others do with that particular name. As a result of this, Larry was forced to make a new channel and earn the ads from there instead of his original YouTube account that he’s been used to for a few years now. The only good thing about this is that Larry’s no longer promoting ScrewAttack in any way.

    I actually sent Larry a private message asking what happened between him and Craig despite not being in contact with him before. I was suggested by a friend of mine to send him a PM asking for the details on the situation since he knew Larry was a very nice guy to almost anyone. The worst I expected from Larry was telling me to go fuck myself and die in a fire for being nosey about it. As a matter of fact, that wasn’t the case and he explained *everything* to me! His reasons are much better than what Craig and his butt buddies pulled out of their asses.

    As their response, ScrewAttack made a 12-minute video (which no longer exists) ganging up on Larry and saying he had no right to use the ScrewAttackEurope channel for money and how he shouldn’t be using the channel now despite it being his channel. They came up with a bunch of sarcastic bullshit (again, sarcasm is the lowest form of wit) and wished Larry to do well with his future and earning money for his work which was followed by “We all like money, right?”

    In conclusion, ScrewAttack as well as the owner Craig Skistimas are an abomination to mankind. They have shows that meet the same comedic value as Seltzerberg, the community (or rather “g1s”) are a disgrace to humanity, the Video Game Vaults are flooded with horrible random images and videos from the internet as well as top tens which also contain some absurd decisions and most of all, Stuttering Craig is a douchebag! He is also a backstabber and doesn’t even justify his own actions. He thinks he’s always right whether it’s for the top 10 choices or for business actions.

    Maybe they have some good associates apart from the Angry Video Game Nerd but if they definitely show potential, they’re not doing themselves any favour by sticking with ScrewAttack. They’ll have a better image by not having any association with them, and this applies even to James Rolfe. He’s the reason why people even knew about ScrewAttack to begin with. The gaming world is much better off without these evil companies.

    Very good interview. I too wonder why he is “Stuttering” Craig.

    @bahamut
    Aww, I’m a disgrace to humanity? That is the quite possibly the kindest thing that has ever been said to me (being completely sincere here).

    As far as everything you said, I’m not quite sure you are listening to what you yourself said. “Stuttering Craig fucks up is by declaring his lists as always right. What an egotistical and arrogant *prick*!” Okay, so of all the times you said Craig was overly sarcastic, you didn’t pick up on that sarcasm?

    Eh, whatever, hate him if you want. Overall, have a nice day :)

  3. Thanks for the interview. It was fun. Thanks for the guy who wrote the encyclopediadramatica article below it.

  4. @gaarathedancingpanda
    Sorry for hurting your feelings, mate.

    @Stuttering Craig
    “Thanks for the guy who wrote the encyclopediadramatica article below it.” Ha! Says the same guy who still has yet to bury the hatchet with Handsome Tom.

  5. @Bahamut
    Talk about your all time tl;dr’s. Seriously half of that was just completely nonsense though. You can’t seem to pick up on his light-hearted approach to most of their videos or on his heavy sarcasm (which was not only around while Tom was there but which Tom partook in).

    He says to play Mega Man 2 on the old NES instead of an emulator or compilation and you take offense to that? What are you retarded? He’s just saying some games are better played on their original platforms. Which is definitely true. Play any old NES or SNES game on VC that you may have played growing up, its great to play again (or for the first time) but you can tell it would just be better with an old school system.

    You’re really just looking for reasons to bitch. Quit it with the Wah wah stuff.

    Anyway good interview.

  6. @Zzyzx
    I understand your criticism towards Bahamut. Also, I vowed to myself four years ago not to insult nor say anything bad about Craig, since we both started ScrewAttack together. You know, had we actually registered the site together when we had the chance, things would’ve been different.

    @Eric
    I’d be glad to be interviewed by you sometime in the near future. Keep up the good work.

  7. Stuttering Craig is quite a douche. He spoil games and doesnt give a crapper of what anybody thinks of it. He reminds me of a former friend, who was such a douche that I had to kick him out of my house.

    Despite of what has been said. I like his videos; their good and fun to watch; but those spoilers have to go or its me that has to go. Theres plenty of other video game websites.

  8. @Handsome Tom
    Was never meaning anything towards you. But I hope you and Craig both keep up the good work on your respective sites!

  9. Anything negative*

  10. Both Tom and Craig seem to be gentlemen about the situation at this point.

    They may not be best buds anymore, but what happened, happened.

    I wish both of them luck.

  11. You know, half the people on YouTube are definately on Tom’s side, the other half stick to Craig’s side, believing in their own mind, “Oh, Tom deserved to get kicked out of ScrewAttack, because he was really lazy, and couldn’t keep up with the almighty Craig.”

    I understand where they’re going with this, but here’s the evidence that proves the “Tom is lazy and Craig is a god” theory wrong. Tom owns two restaurants,? is married with a child, and has still continued The Game Heroes on the side; Lazy, he’s not.

    Everyone I’ve ever talked to who has encountered or worked with Craig has not had anything good to say about his business practices (tending to claim fraudulent copyright, roping people into unreasonable contracts, not paying as promised, etc).

    From my understanding of about the situation, it really came down to the fact that Craig didn’t want to co-run ScrewAttack.

  12. @Critical Dave
    Thanks for bringing that important piece of info regarding Tom and Craig’s break-up.

    @Bahamut
    I’m sorry for calling you a retard. I’m the one who should quit it with the wah-wah stuff.

    @Stuttering Craig
    I’ve seen a lot of your VGV’s, and you leave out very important details. For example, in you and Daily Destin’s review of Captain America and the Avengers for the SNES, you never mention that it came out in the Arcades first. That’s one of your many failed attempts at video-game research, putting you in the same league as the Irate Gamer, and if you don’t like it, tough shit!!!

  13. Wow I love how someone went to the length of posting under my name (Bahamut I assume).

    I stand by my remark. You are retarded, and should quit wah-wahing. And now a lying sack of shit too.

    Pathetic

  14. @Zzyzx
    Hey, lay off Bahamut. He knows what he’s talking about.

  15. Whoever’s posting above as “Critical Dave” is not me; if you’re named Dave and happen to be quite critical, that’s fine, but don’t link to my website.

    Sorry for an off-topic comment, but that’s not me up there.

  16. @Critical Dave
    Oh well, look no further Critical Dave. That was me, it’s a fair cop, I done it!

    @Bahamut
    PBC Productions and Underbelly have also suffered from Stuttering Craig’s backstabbing! They left as Craig wasn’t willing to pay them the money they needed to continue making their shows! It just proves that Craig has made more bad business decisions than good ones!

  17. As we all know, Handsome Tom has now retired his Game Heroes site, as well as admit that there’s no longer any bad blood between him and Craig.
